MONEY SAVING TIPS FOR MOMS.

I don’t know about you, but I always look for ways to save money as a mom. The cost of living has become so high that I’m sure I am not the only mom looking for ways to save money on groceries, clothing, or day-to-day expenses.

As moms, we have many monthly expenses, not to mention worrying about funding our children’s university education someday. If you have young children, then you know how expensive things are, so do not forget all the unforeseen expenses that you did not include in your monthly budget.

It doesn’t matter if you are a stay-at-home mom, a mom who works part-time or a mom with a full-time job. Even moms who are financially stable or moms who struggle to live paycheck to paycheck should be saving money and the more money you can save, the better.

We need to be frugal to save money every chance we can.

For most families worldwide, the days when they could survive on one salary or even live comfortably on one are gone. So many people work on the side to make extra money.

This post is for moms worldwide who are keen to find out more about money-saving tips.

How often do you think about how you can save money?

Save money and boost your savings account. Have more money saved away for rainy days or for when a financial emergency pops up and you need money. So, let’s have a look at some easy ways for moms to save money. Remember, you can take baby steps to start.

1. BUDGET AND PLAN.

Do you sit down and plan your budget for the month? What are your monthly expenses? How much money do you spend on food? How much food do you end up wasting? It is so essential for you to take the time to budget and plan for the month.

Track your spending for the month and stick to your budget. Sit down with your partner and plan the budget together. Both of you need to be on the same page and want to budget, plan and save money.

You can also write down what you buy every day. This way, you know exactly where you bought it and how much money you spent at the shop. I have a friend who didn’t keep track of her spending. She asked me what to do, and I told her to write down everything she bought for a month.

She did, and she was shocked by the amount of money she spent monthly. She also told me she didn’t realize how much money she spent on unnecessary items. Things add up very quickly.

You can have a spreadsheet to help you keep track of your money.

Planners: There are so many planners you can use to help you, such as meal planners and monthly budget trackers.

Before you do your monthly shopping plan, plan and plan. Go through your cupboards, pantry, fridge, and freezer. Have a closer look at what you have and what you need to buy for the new month. Do you really need to buy items or can the items last the whole of the following month?

Next, go through the pamphlets with all the specials and see what you have on your list and what is on special. Try to buy most of your items on special. I go through all the pamphlets and cross-check to see which shop has the cheapest prices for the items I need to buy.

Okay, so maybe you dont want to drive from shop to shop. I go to a mall that has all the shops I need to go to with the special I want to buy. Make sure you have a meal before you go shopping. Stick to your budget!

2. COOK AND EAT AT HOME.

Most moms know that being on a budget means saving money by cooking and eating most of your meals at home and only eating out once in a while. Eating out is expensive, and eating at home is much cheaper, especially if you plan your monthly meals ahead of time. Not only does this save money, but it can also save you time.

Plus, when you cook your own meals at home, you know exactly what ingredients you are using when cooking your yummy homemade meals. My family and I enjoy eating out every now and again, but it is not something we do often. We all look forward to eating out it is a treat for the whole family.

3. DON’T BUY FANCY COFFEE.

I love buying a cappuccino from the coffee stall up the road as a treat once in a blue moon.

Let’s face it: fancy coffees are pricy, so you can save money by not buying one every day. Have a fancy coffee as a treat once in a while. Think about how much you are spending on fancy coffee if you do buy one daily. I live in South Africa, and a cappuccino up the road costs R25 for a regular cup, and a large cup costs R35.

So, buying a fancy coffee daily can really add up! If you do buy nice coffee every day, try doing so once in a while. You might be surprised if you put the money aside and see how much you have at the end of the month.

Another option is to save up and buy a coffee maker for yourself, which you can use at home to make your own yummy coffee. When you have saved up enough money have a look online to see which shops have big specials on coffee machines. Always do lots of research before investing in a coffee machine.

A simple milk frother is also an option.

I really didn’t want to give up my caffeinated treat, so I started making my own at home.

4. USE LOYALTY CARDS.

Do you have store loyalty cards? If not, it is a good idea to have loyalty cards for the shops you buy from most.

I also have a look and see what items are special, like when you buy three products and you only pay for two products. I often look through the specials pamphlets to see if toiletries I need to buy are on special for pay for two get three.

Dont forget your loyalty cards at home before you go shopping. Check to make sure that you have the loyalty cards in your purse. You dont want to miss out on in-store specials. Make sure to swipe your loyalty cards every time you go shopping! Doing so can save you a lot of money!

Nowadays, if you dont want to carry all your loyalty cards with you in your purse you can download the apps onto your mobile phone. If you opt to do so please remember to take your mobile phone with you when you go shopping.

I live in South Africa, and some of the most popular loyalty cards are:

Pick n Pay

Woolies

5. SHOP THE SALES.

So when do you go shopping for new clothing, shoes and accessories? Anytime you or a family member needs new clothing.

You will save a lot of money if you go shopping when the big stores have massive sales. I know that here in South Africa, popular clothing stores have up to 50-70% off at the end of the season. This is a great time to go shopping for items you really need. Okay, this is also a question. Can you wait until then?

For food and cosmetic stores, you have to buy three and only pay for two. Many clothing stores are now also offering this special.

You’ll save money if you buy sale items that you usually buy anyway. While it’s tempting to stray from that path (that sale table), stick to your normal stuff. Checkers often have deals: When you buy two, you get a discount, e.g., spaghetti. Black Friday is another one where you can stock up.

If you can, put money away monthly when the stores have their big sales. This way, you do not have to spend what you and your family need to buy. Make a list of what you and your family need to buy.

6. GROW YOUR OWN HERBS AND VEGETABLES.

Are you someone who has green fingers? Sadly, no. Although I do plant herbs in my garden, I am so glad they are growing and not dying. I have basil, thyme, rosemary and lavender. I use basil and thyme in many family meals I cook for lunch and supper.

When I make a Sunday roast with roast chicken, I use lots of rosemary and thyme. The drippings left in the roasting dish can make a yummy thyme and rosemary grave.

Not only do I have herbs, but I also have a lemon tree, a naartjie tree, and an orange tree growing in my garden. At the time of writing this post, the orange tree had 13 oranges, and the naartjie tree had about 25 naartjies growing on it. My kids cannot wait to eat the fruits and tell their friends they picked the fruits from fruit trees grown at home in the garden.

Think about which herbs you use most in your cooking. Plant the herbs in your garden. If you do not have a garden, you can buy the plant and keep it on the window sill in the correct position for it to thrive and grow. Pick off as you need.

So, if you think you have green fingers or like the idea of growing your own herbs and vegetables, then try it. You never know you have green fingers; you just didn’t know you did.

Anything you can do is research homemade cleaning products you can use at home to save you money on buying cleaning products. I use vinegar and bicarbonate of soda around the house in many different ways. I use bicarbonate of soda and white vinegar when I wash my bedding.

Before you use household products, please do your own research to determine what is safe to use and what to avoid.

7. USE YOUR SPARE TIME WISELY.

How busy are you during the day? Do you have many things to do?

When you are not busy, what do you do in your spare time? Catch up on the TV shows you want to watch.

Why not find ways to earn extra money in your spare time? You can still watch the TV shows you want to catch up on and take part in online surveys while doing so. Have a look at the best survey sites for moms to join and make extra money online.

I take online surveys while waiting at the doctor’s office or the dentist’s office or while sitting in my car waiting for my kids to finish school.

I am a busy mom, that is for sure, but in those spare moments of the day, like waiting in the pick-up line at school or in the waiting room at the dentist’s office, I like to take quick surveys that help me make some extra cash.
