Do you buy items in bulk to save money? Bulk buying is a great way to avoid running out of essential household items you use often.

What items should you buy in bulk? From household essentials to personal care items, tinned food, dry food, and cleaning items, stocking up on these items can help you avoid going to the store to buy them. Not only that, but I find that when I go to the store, I don’t always walk out with that one item I went to buy.

Are you the same? Do you also leave the store with more items than you planned on purchasing?

Always make sure you check the expiry dates of the items you are bulk buying. Be sure the items you buy are items you do need and use often in your home. There’s no point in bulk buying and stocking up on items if you are not using the items often.

How To Save Money Cooking At Home.

Here are some essential items you should consider buying in bulk to save money, time, and trips to the store.

1. BREAD.

Bread: I always buy three to four loaves of bread and freeze loaves for later or for toast. When my kids want something quick to eat, I can always quickly make them a toasted sandwich.

2. COFFEE.

I don’t know about the price of coffee where you live, but I live in South Africa, and coffee is not cheap. Whenever the coffee I enjoy drinking is on special, I buy at least two to three jars, so I have coffee for a while. It feels as if each time I go to the shop, the coffee is more expensive than the last time.

3. TEA.

Tea: If you enjoy drinking tea, then, like with coffee, this is another staple household item to stock up on and have enough of.

4. SUGAR.

Stock up on sugar if you do make sure to store the sugar properly.

5. TOILET PAPER.

Yipe, this is one item I definitely stock up on, and I always watch for toilet paper specials at the store. Look for when the stores have buy three and only pay for two.

Running out of toilet paper is not a pleasant situation, so it’s better not to stock up on toilet paper as you always have.

6. TRASH BAGS.

Trash bags, or black bags, as we call them, in South Africa.

Having an ample supply of trash bags is crucial for keeping your home tidy. Buying them in bulk ensures you never run out at the most inconvenient times, and it often works out cheaper per bag.

7. AIR FILTERS.

How often do you replace your air filters? Regularly replacing your air filters is important for maintaining good air quality in your home.

Stock up on air filters and buy them in bulk. This way, you will have air filters available when needed and not need to buy them at the store. Chances are, you will not only leave the store with air filters in hand.

8. PERSONAL HYGIENE PRODUCTS.

Items like shampoo, conditioner, body wash, feminine hygiene products, razor blades, bars of soap (like Dove), and roll-ons are included. Bulk buying these items in bulk is a good idea, especially when they are on special.

9. FOOD STAPLES.

Pantry staples include flour (cake and self-raising), sugar, rice, pasta, noodles, ramen, packet soups, yeast for baking bread, and box milk. I do not buy fresh milk; I only buy boxes and at least 36 by 1-litre cartons at a time.

I do not enjoy waking up in the morning and realizing there is no milk to add to my morning cup of coffee. That’s why I always make sure I have lots of milk.

10. PAPER TOWELS.

Paper towels come in handy for everything from draining your fried chips to cleaning up spills and other messes around the house. I always have a roll of toilet paper on the kitchen counter.

Buying paper towels in bulk means you always have them handy when you need to drain your chips, like I do, or wipe up spills around the house.

11. SOAP.

Be it hand or bath soap, buying soap in bulk and storing it until you need it is always a good idea to buy soap in bulk and store it until you need it. I taught my kids good hand hygiene from a young age.

12. CANNED FOOD GOODS.

I love stocking up on tinned foods.

Baked tinned beans ( a wide variety of tinned beans), tinned spaghetti in tomato sauce, tinned soups, tinned vegetables, and tinned tuna are also available.

I find tinned soup really handy. I just warm up a tin and eat it with fresh bread. With the tinned tomatoes, I slice up some onions, garlic, and bacon and fry them until crispy, then add the tinned spaghetti. You can add some chilli and fresh ginger if you want to.

It is a very good idea to stock up on tinned foods. Just make sure you check the expiry date when you do so.

Canned foods have a long shelf life and come in handy during emergencies or when you’re short on time for meal prep. Stock up on staples like beans, tomatoes, and soups for a well-rounded pantry.

13. LAUNDRY DETERGENT.

I don’t know about you, but as a stay-at-home mom with two young children, I always have washing to do.

It feels like the one thing I always have, rain, sun, or shine, is laundry. Nothing is worse than having to wash my bedding and, oops, guess what? I’ve run out of washing detergent.

I buy laundry detergent in bulk because I do not like running out of laundry detergent. Not with all the dirty laundry I have daily.

14. DISH LIQUID DETERGENT.

Dish liquid: Like laundry detergent, I stock up so I don’t run out, especially when I need it. Buy dish liquid in bulk, and you’re less likely to run out of dish liquid.

If you have a dishwasher, you should stock up on washing tablets and cleaning liquid to remove limescale buildup.

15. BATTERIES.

How often do you get ready to use a remote and it doesn’t work because the batteries are flat? You start to look around the house for batteries only to realize you don’t have any spare batteries at home.

Buying batteries in bulk can help prevent this. So, next time you go to the store, stock up on batteries.

16. CAT LITTER.

Do you have a pet cat? Cat owners know how important it is to have a fresh supply of cat litter. Watch out for specials on kitty litter so you always have it handy when your kitty needs her/his litter box changed.

17. DIAPERS/NAPPIES.

I have two kids, so I know how many nappies you go through, and believe me, when I tell you, don’t get caught without nappies. Stock up and buy the big boxes. I used to buy a size up, too. Babies grow so fast, and you go through a lot of nappies.

Buy wet wipes in bulk along with the nappies. I went through so many wet wipes, which are handy for wiping sticky fingers and dirty toes.

I always had lots of nappies and wet wipes in the boot of my car and my husband’s car, along with a couple of clean clothing for the babies. Not forgetting bum cream.

Parents know that diapers are a constant necessity when caring for a baby. Buying them in bulk can lead to significant savings and ensures you’re always prepared for diaper changes.

When cold and flu season hits, you’ll want to be prepared with essential cold care items like cough medicine, cough drops, tissues, and soothing teas. Buying these items in bulk ensures you’re ready to tackle any symptoms that come your way.

18. MEAT.

How big is your freezer? Do you have space to buy meat?

If you have space in your freezer, you can buy meat in bulk. Cost-effective meat to buy is minced meat, sausage, bacon (I love bacon, so I stock up), chicken portions, chicken livers (if you like it), burger patties, ribs, and chicken breasts ( I use these to make chicken nuggets and chicken schnitzel).

Buying meat is a very cost-effective way to stock up on protein. Look for specials at the stores.
